Three Principles for a Better Stretch Practice

Blog post Three simple principles for improving a stretch routine without constantly adding more exercises: pay attention, progress gradually, and return consistently.

MOVEMENT PRACTICE

When a stretch routine stops feeling effective, the natural reaction is often to add something new.

A new exercise. A deeper position. Another routine.

I don't think more is always the answer.

Over time, three principles have become more useful to me.

Pay attention.
Notice what you're actually feeling instead of automatically trying to increase the stretch.

Progress gradually.
Range is useful when you can breathe, organize yourself and eventually control it.

Return to the practice.
Three or four movements repeated regularly can teach you much more than constantly changing routines.

The routine doesn't always need to become harder.

Sometimes you become better at understanding the routine.

Try this: Choose three stretches you already know and practice only those for one week. Notice what changes from the first day to the last.
